The history of Colorado Provençal: an industrial site with a rich past
The Colorado Provençal is a former ochre site, which was active between 1871 and 1991. Classified natural monuments of historical character, this private site tells us the history of the ocher industry through its quarries, its cutting fronts, its industrial remains, its decanting ponds, and its gutters.
In the past, in winter and early spring, oxen worked in quarries. Water from rivers and springs was stored in sumps (reservoirs) and, thanks to powerful motors, the water was pumped under pressure into piping systems. It was then directed to the face faces of quarries where ochre was washed with water hoses. This process separated ochre from sand. The mixture of water, sand and ocher flowed through gutters to reach settling ponds where ocher deposited at the bottom, heavier than water.
The drying process of ocher was similar to that of salt marshes. The dried ochre was then cut into bricks and stacked to dry in the sun and wind. Only 20% of the ochre was mined, with the rest being sand and tailings. These bricks were then transported to factories for processing and use in the manufacture of pigments.
