CAMPASUN - Lac de Castillon: a Verdon jewel

Lac de Castillon: a Verdon jewel

Published on 12/02/2025 by CAMPASUN

Lac de Castillon is a veritable jewel of nature nestled in the heart of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, in the Verdon Regional Park. This 10 km-long artificial lake was created in 1948 following the construction of the Castillon dam. It is the second largest lake in the region, just after the famous Lac de Sainte-Croix. Staying at one of our three Verdon campsites means you can easily explore this exceptional site.

History of Lac de Castillon

Lac de Castillon was created to meet the region’s electricity and water management needs. Its dam, built in 1948, is an impressive 95-meter-high structure that regulates the waters of the Verdon. Prior to its construction, this valley was occupied by farmland and hamlets, now submerged beneath the crystalline waters of the lake. This major project transformed the landscape and contributed to the region’s economic and tourism development. Today, the lake plays a key role in hydroelectric production and is an essential water reservoir for irrigation and supplying neighboring communities.

Must-do activities at Lac de Castillon

Lac de Castillon is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts. Whether you’re into kayaking, windsurfing, catamaran sailing, waterskiing or wakeboarding, this lake offers the ideal playground. The more adventurous can try their hand at towed buoys or stand-up paddling for a fun and refreshing experience.

For an even more unusual adventure, night-time canoe trips are organized on Lac de Castillon, allowing you to admire the starry sky in an enchanting setting. Numerous beaches, such as the Plage du Plan in Saint-André-les-Alpes and La Baie du Cheiron in Castellane, allow you to enjoy the lake in complete peace and quiet.

Fishing enthusiasts will also be delighted, as Lac de Castillon is renowned for its rich fish life. It is home to numerous species of fish, attracting anglers from all over the region.
