Roussillon

Among the Most Beautiful Villages in France, Roussillon is undoubtedly one of the most charming and surprising. It lies at the heart of Europe’s largest ochre deposit.
The result: shimmering, surprising colours, picturesque lanes and staircases, and superb facades. Located in the Parc Naturel Régional du Lubéron, this village has many assets, and is the starting point for unforgettable walks and hikes during your stay at a campsite in the Lubéron.
Visiting Roussillon in the Vaucluse
The first thing you notice are the yellow, orange and red facades of the houses, not the stone ones. An unusual village, it is also magnificently surrounded by vineyards, cherry trees, olive groves and lavender.
The Sentier des Ocres (Ochre Trail) allows you to explore the cliffs and the pretty tree-lined, landscaped paths of the old quarries. Full explanations are provided, including on the geology, fauna and flora of these extraordinary places. The view from the cliffs is impressive.
To find out all about it, head to the ochre ecomuseum, which takes you on a journey from prehistory to the present day, with workshops for making pastels and watercolours.
You can also visit the belfry, the former gateway to the Castrum now a bell tower, the church of Saint-Michel, the orientation table and the beautiful fountain of the Naiads (former village wash-houses).
The views of Mont Ventoux from the orientation table, and of the village from the path leading to the Sentier, are breathtaking. For the more energetic, there are a number of walks to choose from, including two of 7 and 9 kilometres, as well as a bike ride lasting almost 5 hours.
Les Hautes Prairies campsite, in Lourmarin, is less than 23 kilometres from this village.
What to do around Roussillon in the Vaucluse?
The City of the Popes, otherwise known as Avignon, is just 1 hour away by car. This city is fascinating not only for its culture, but also for its history. There is no shortage of monuments and museums, not to mention its famous bridge, its parks and gardens, its theatres… Its religious heritage is of course considerable, as are its cemeteries with their unusual architecture, and its art deco facades.
Discover Bonnieux, a hilltop village in the Lubéron, offering exceptional views over the region. Its church and century-old cedar trees are surprising, as are its steep, winding streets. Here too, the remains of wash-houses, ramparts and fountains are a pleasant surprise. The terraces of the cafés and restaurants are particularly popular with tourists.
Finally, take a stroll along the beautiful paths of the Colorado Provençal, between Roussillon and Rustrel. Its beauty is both natural and man-made: the ocriers. The landscapes become unique, with fantastic shapes. You’ll think you’re in the desert, but also on cliffs, on paths that are totally fictitious, yet very real.
